An education off the grid

Like students everywhere adjusting to the curveball thrownby the coronavirus, Olin students have been grappling with their options for the Fall 2020 semester. Return to campus? Olin Alumni Co-Design Virtual Curriculum

Zachary del Rosario, a member of Olin’s Class of 2014 and recent Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at Stanford, was named Visiting Assistant Professor of Engineering at Olin this spring and is set to begin teaching this fall.

Michael Heyns ’13 and Mariah Dunn Moon ’13, both currently working at Microsoft, are partnering with the Olin SCOPE team, AI + Inclusion: The Future of City Navigation, this semester. Inclusive design is a methodology that enables and supports the full range of human diversity. However, when cities aim to incorporate inclusive design, people with visual disabilities can be overlooked. It’s been about 15 years since Matthew Tesch, class of ’07, started down the path that would lead to StaffPad, an advanced music notation app designed for composers that turns hand-written musical notation into typeset scores.

As a child growing up in Houston, Texas, Etosha Cave ’06 had an ingrained awareness and appreciation for petroleum and fossil fuels. This awareness grew into “a desire to mitigate the waste from them, find alternatives and find a more balanced approach to energy,” she says.
