Dr. Sempere鈥檚 research examines the relationship between change of place and poetics in twentieth-century American literature, specifically how change of place affects a writer鈥檚 poetics.
She combines a digital humanities approach with genetic criticism, using deep maps to follow manuscript development spatio-temporally and then studying the texts themselves. Her research draws together cultural geography, phenomenology, constructionist learning theory, and literary analysis, and her dissertation comprised a case study of poet Elizabeth Bishop鈥檚 move from North America to Brazil.
Dr. Sempere recently returned to the Boston area after over a decade in Switzerland, where she taught undergraduate creative writing, literature and writing, and speaking courses. Prior to returning to academia, Dr. Sempere co-founded an online tutoring company focused exclusively on teaching writing. She was the Director of Education of a New York-based tutoring company, and a founding faculty member of a charter school in Cambridge, MA.
